While considering process heating in an industry there are a few basic factors to be taken into consideration before selecting the equipment for the process.Firstly the material concerned, temperature at which it has to be heated/cooled, the maximum temperature etc. has to be ascertained. Then the cost involved, power consumption and the required accuracy level is to be determined. The Watt density and sheath material (copper, steel, etc) has to be determined, actually that would depend on the material and the kind of heater used.

Thirdly, the heater type has to be determined, whether you would choose from conduction i.e. Cast heaters, immersion, etc. or convection or the latest infrared halogen and ultraviolet lights. There are quite a few types to choose from. Fourthly a proper temperature sensor has to be selected this would depend on the kind of environment it would be used in whether it would be a volatile area or high temperature one. Finally the kind of temperature control has to be chosen two best choices would be whether it is open loop or a closed loop one.

Once these basics decision are made, thought has to be given to decrease operating and maintenance costs, better stability and long life. Normally process heating changes are undertaken if the equipment in place is not giving the desired result or the process is a new one.
